Kyle Sampson keeps his law license for now
D. Kyle Sampson, the LDS attorney who was chief of staff to former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, has obtained a rare waiver to continue practicing law in the District of Columbia despite an ongoing criminal investigation. Sampson has been implicated in the firing of U.S. Attorneys and is being investigated by special prosecutor Nora Dannehy under suspicion of misleading Congress. Last year his law license renewal was rejected by the D.C. Committee on Admissions, but in an unusual step, the D.C. Court of Appeals reversed that decision. It probably helped that Sampson’s list of references included John Ashcroft, former 4th Circuit Judge Karen Williams, and former U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeffrey Taylor. Sampson currently is a partner in the D.C. office of Hunton & Williams, and will be allowed to practice there until a final decision is made on his bar license application.
